This is the main way that images are composed in Photoshop: It's a collection of artifice that enables you to perform tasks on an image. Layers are described in the next section. The Print version of Photoshop comes with lots of preset modules — common tasks you can do with images, such as Lighten or Darken an area, make a person's eyes stand out, change the image color balance, change the photo's exposure, or apply special effects. Although you can use Photoshop without layers, it's much more difficult, and it's a fairly advanced technique. Sometimes the Select tool is used to select objects on a canvas — an area of the image that you then work on. And unlike layers, the canvas isn't changed, so all new work remains on the original image. You can turn on and off layers and work on a layer by using the Tool Options dialog box (Control-T).
